Testimonial

Introduction

John was 'honoured and delighted' to be granted a testimonial by Tranmere Rovers in March 2009 after nearly 11 years of service to the club.

Premiership neighbours Everton agreed to provide the opposition for Ronnie Moore's Tranmere team, but it was perhaps the Heroes Match before the main event that drew most of the Tranmere fans' interest.

John's respect in the game was clear to see, as nearly 50 former Tranmere players, coaches and managers returned to pay tribute to the Dutchman on a night of magic at Prenton Park.

The 'Wembley 2000' team would start the nights entertainment against 'Tranmere Past', a team made up of players to have been part of the club during John's spell at Prenton Park.  The likes of David Kelly, Clint Hill, Liam O'Brien, Iain Hume and Georges Santos all laced their boots up and ran out on to the hallowed turf in front of their adoring fans once again.

The Heroes Match finished 2-2.

The main event then saw Tranmere and Everton go head-to-head in a fast-paced and competitive 'friendly'.  John played 60 minutes before leaving the pitch to a standing ovation.
